Artist Statement
My work consists of large scale portraits, figure studies, and still lifes rendered as mixed media paintings and colored pencil drawings. They are all part of an ongoing practice of formal studio experimentation in search of a balance between spontaneity and rigor. Some sections are laboriously rendered bits of colored pencil photorealism—a very meditative process—while others are scribbled or painted quickly and freely, forcing me to stay more present.
There is a certain dissolution of the body that occurs in my work. What begins with original source photos becomes, on canvas, a wrestling match between control and accident. The works incorporate depth and flatness, beauty and ugliness, unembellished realism and ultra-saturated abstraction. Culturally, we often keep our own bodies at arm’s length, yet they serve as the beating pulse of nearly every political conflict in America, whether in terms of white supremacy, reproductive rights, trans and queer discrimination, or extractive climate practices. The distance at which we hold each other—and the ways in which we “other” ourselves—is of particular interest to me. I view the world empathetically, with a great love of people, so my work is a means to personally slow down and mend those disconnections through pencils and paint. Cosmology and spirituality also inform the ways in which the work questions the solidity of these porous vessels by which we define ourselves.
Portraiture is an act of protracted observation; it provides an excuse to stare. The longer and the closer you look, the more a body will break down into its component parts: tone, texture, form, and line. The observation I’m interested in is at once methodical, in the elaborately rendered details of a person’s skin or hair, for example, and intuitive, through quick marks and instinctive color choices. Combining these ways of seeing into energetically dynamic pictures is an attempt to visualize the paradoxes of our lives: that we are apart from the world but a part of it; that we can know many people but never know what it is to be them; and that we are each individually finite, flawed, and inconsequential—ants in a supremely dysfunctional hill—and at the same time part of an endless, marvelous continuum.
